A new sprayable COVID shot that enters your body through your nose has cleared its first human trial, but independent scientists are sounding urgent alarms about a terrifying risk the researchers completely ignored: the shot can spread from vaxxed to unvaxed people without their knowledge or consent.
The CVXGA1 intranasal shot, published in Science Advances, uses a live virus that replicates in your nasal passages and can be “shed” to others through normal breathing and talking.  Critics warn this could expose unvaxxed individuals — including pregnant women, children, and immunocompromised people — to genetically modified viral particles against their will.

But perhaps the most disturbing question is: why is this experimental shot even being developed?  Multiple studies have already documented massive harm from previous COVID shots, including heart damage, blood clots, sudden deaths, and immune system dysfunction.
With questionable efficacy and problematic safety profiles already established, why are researchers now pushing an intranasal version that could spread to others?

The shedding risk they didn’t want you to know about

The study’s own data proves the shot causes viral shedding.  Researchers detected the shot virus in nasal swabs of participants one day after administration, with levels reaching up to 3.9 log10 PFU/ml — meaning thousands of viral particles being shed from each person’s nose.

“The study didn’t examine if shed materials can be spread to others.  This raises significant safety concerns about replication and shedding risks,” warned investigative journalist Sonia Elijah.

Dr. Karl Jablonowski, senior research scientist for Children’s Health Defense, explained the platform uses parainfluenza virus type 5, a “communicable respiratory virus between humans and non-human animals.”  Since this shot is “self-spreading,” he noted, “there is no informed consent or medical precautions as the ‘shot’ may infect infants, children, pregnant women, immunocompromised or medically frail.”

Dr. Karina Acevedo Whitehouse, professor of microbiology at the Autonomous University of Querétaro, agreed there are “high chances” this shot will result in “persistent shedding,” citing a 2023 study of a similar intranasal shot that detected virus shedding in 17% of participants.

Why create more dangerous shots when previous ones failed?

The rush to develop yet another COVID shot becomes even more questionable, considering documented failures of previous versions.  Government databases worldwide show unprecedented adverse events following COVID shots, including myocarditis in young people, sudden cardiac deaths in athletes, blood clotting disorders, immune suppression, and neurological damage.

Studies show shot efficacy wanes rapidly, often within months, while the spike protein these shots produce has been linked to cellular damage throughout the body.  With mounting evidence of harm and questionable benefit, developing an intranasal version that could potentially spread to non-consenting individuals raises serious ethical concerns.

The study’s fatal flaws

No control group: The study included zero unvaxxed participants for comparison.  “There is absolutely no way that this paper can be considered evidence that this intranasal gene-therapy based product is safe or effective,” Dr. Whitehouse stated.

Tiny sample size: Only 72 people participated — far too small to detect serious adverse events.

Limited safety monitoring: Researchers only tracked adverse events for weeks, not months or years.

No shedding studies: Despite detecting viral shedding, researchers performed no studies to determine if shed particles could infect others.

The spike protein is delivered directly to your lungs

The shot produces the same spike protein found in Pfizer and Moderna shots, linked to blood clots, heart damage, and immune dysfunction.  Unlike injected shots that stay in your arm muscle, this intranasal shot delivers spike protein directly to your respiratory system, potentially causing more severe reactions.

“Genetically modifying an infectious respiratory virus to express a spike protein is a familiar and really bad idea,” Dr. Jablonowski warned.

Natural immune system support that works

Instead of relying on experimental shots that spread without consent, focus on proven strategies:

Optimize vitamin D: Maintain blood levels between 50-80 ng/ml.  Deficiency dramatically increases infection risk.

Strengthen your gut: 70% of your immune system lives in your digestive tract.  Support it with fermented foods and probiotics while avoiding processed foods.

Power up with nutrients: Vitamin C, zinc, quercetin, and elderberry have strong scientific backing for immune support.

Reduce toxic load: Choose organic foods, filter water, and limit chemical exposure that suppresses immune function.

Manage stress: Chronic stress floods your body with cortisol, which suppresses your immunity.

The self-spreading agenda

Dr. Jessica Rose warns that if successful, “this could be used to push gene-based products on us via intranasal breathing routes.”  Shots that spread person-to-person without individual consent could eliminate medical freedom entirely.

With researchers planning to enroll 10,000 participants in the next phase, we’re moving toward involuntary exposure to this new gene-based therapy.

Your immune system has evolved over millions of years to protect you naturally when properly supported.  While pharmaceutical companies rush to develop self-spreading shots with unknown consequences, you have the power to strengthen your defenses safely and effectively.

For those serious about building a robust immune system without experimental interventions, Jonathan Landsman’s Immune Defense Summit offers comprehensive strategies from 34 leading doctors, scientists, and researchers who reveal natural protocols that help your immune system thrive.

Analysis by Dr. Joseph Mercola     July 13, 2025

Story at-a-glance

  • Dr. Bowden used rapid PCR (polymerase chain reaction) tests and early interventions like monoclonal antibodies and ivermectin to successfully treat over 6,000 patients during the COVID-19 pandemic
  • Government agencies and medical boards coordinated to suppress effective treatments while promoting expensive alternatives through an $11.5 billion propaganda campaign
  • Hospitals indiscriminately used ventilators and harmful protocols, with some cases resembling euthanasia rather than proper patient care during the peak of the pandemic
  • Athletic sudden deaths rose from 29 to 290 annually, with myocarditis cases rising significantly, yet politicians remain silent due to pharmaceutical industry influence
  • Despite growing political support for medical autonomy, powerful medical organizations continue suppressing free speech and patient choice regarding treatments

In a three-hour interview with Joe Rogan, Dr. Mary Talley Bowden recounts her experience in the trenches during the COVID-19 pandemic.1 While she has saved thousands of lives, the establishment vilified her by refusing to use treatments they endorsed. I encourage you to watch the entire episode, as it’s an eye-opening story of what went on behind the scenes.

Early Testing and Treatment Save Lives

According to Bowden, early pandemic testing delays were severe, often lasting up to two weeks. These delays allowed the virus more time to spread, exacerbating illness and overwhelming health care systems.

• Quick testing helps the appropriate patients — Bowden contributed to widespread testing by adopting saliva-based polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests, dramatically reducing waiting times to just 24 hours:

“I was already working with a lab for patients with chronic sinusitis, they were doing a PCR testing for chronic sinusitis. So, tests for bacterial and fungal infections of the sinuses. It’s called Microgen DX, and they came out with a saliva test for COVID.

So, we were able to get the results back the next day. So, I started offering that and my little clinic exploded …”

• Doctors still helped whenever they could — Even if patients already had a full-blown infection, Bowden was still bound by her oath to help treat them with whatever tools were available:

“I also had patients come in that were really sick in the second week. And that, that was such a learning experience for me because, you know, normally, if somebody walked into my office with an oxygen saturation in the low 80s, I would call an ambulance. But I had patients who were refusing to go to the hospital, and I had to give them the option to possibly die in my office, which is scary, but we saved them.”

• Monoclonal antibodies worked — Simply put, monoclonal antibodies are lab-grown antibodies2 designed to stimulate your immune system. Bowden recounts how they “worked very well” for her patients, and she would notice improvement the following day.

• Early treatment increases survival outcomes — Bowden says that patients coming in during the beginning phases of the disease helped improve their chances of full recovery:

“[O]nce I knew it was safe, then I started using [ivermectin] and found it worked … All in all, I treated well over 6,000 patients and everybody that got early treatment stayed out of the hospital.”

What Happens When Doctors Speak Out Against the Narrative

Bowden personally encountered severe side effects of the COVID-19 jab while treating patients. But when she spoke out, she was met with vehement opposition:

• More and more athletes are dying due to myocarditis — In 2023, I wrote about how athletes suddenly experiencing heart attacks when the shots were rolled out. Now, the situation has gotten worse, Bowden says:

“So, it used to be 29 per year. Now it’s 290 per year, [a] growth [of] 10 times … And I worry about these kids because myocarditis, the primary symptom is chest pain. But if you’ve got a kid who’s not even speaking yet, you have no idea if they have myocarditis, and myocarditis can leave a permanent scar on the heart and then lead to a lifelong increased risk of sudden cardiac death and we have no idea if these kids have been affected.”

• The government schemed to hit ivermectin — In addition to the rollout of the shots, Bowden believes there was a concerted effort by different parties to suppress ivermectin:

“[T]he Federation of State Medical Boards, which is this private entity — they’re actually located in Texas — who oversees all the state medical boards, they sent out a directive to all the state medical boards concerning ivermectin, concerning misinformation, and basically encouraging the medical boards to go after doctors like myself.”

• Opposition will have a hard time prosecuting lifesavers — While Bowden has been maligned, she is proud of what she did to help patients. In turn, her attackers have no leverage because in the end, she saved lives:

“They can’t find an expert witness to testify against me. There have been three continuances. They finally were awarded summary judgment against me. So, they’ve decided I’m guilty. And now I’m waiting for my punishment. There was a hearing about a month ago to find out what they’re going to find me with and that sort of thing. And I’m just waiting on that, but I do plan on appealing.”

Going deeper into the censorship angle, Bowden shares that the big players are working together to bring down cheap, effective treatments for patients suffering from the COVID-19 pandemic:

• Money was involved in propaganda and censorship — Bowden recounts that all the pieces moved very quickly at the start of the pandemic to usher in the shots as the primary solution:

“If you look at the timing, in March, the government put out the big information on ivermectin and why you should not take it for COVID. They put that on the FDA ‘s website. At the same time, they launched COVID-19 Community Corps, and this was April 1st, 2021.

This was an $11.5 billion slush fund to feed out propaganda and censor people. And the day that they launched the COVID-19 Community Corps was the same day that Houston Methodist, which is where I had privileges, mandated the COVID shots for all their employees, and they were the first in the country.”

• The government purposefully made it hard for doctors to do their jobs — This led to the suppression of effective treatments, such as monoclonal antibodies. Bowden said she didn’t even use ivermectin until the government took over distribution of monoclonal antibodies. After that, it became increasingly difficult to get them.

Were Hospital Protocols Helping or Hurting Patients?

Early pandemic hospital protocols often used ventilators aggressively and universally, regardless of patient-specific needs, frequently worsening outcomes for many individuals:

• Ventilators were forced on patients — Despite leading to worsened pulmonary function, hospitals still put patients on ventilators:

“You don’t look at a number to put somebody on a ventilator. And unfortunately, the people in the hospital didn’t learn. They didn’t experiment in that fashion. They just went by this protocol and automatically put people on ventilators. They also didn’t give people breathing treatments. They thought that breathing treatments would spread the virus.”

• Hospitals were indiscriminately harming patients — During the height of the pandemic, Bowden recounts that hospitals were essentially euthanizing patients to make room for others:

“They’ll justify giving morphine because they’ll say, ‘Oh, well, they’re struggling to breathe.’ Well, guess what? Morphine actually depresses your drive to breathe. Like this one case I remember, this patient, he was sick, he looked like he was dying, but they just pushed morphine. He had no pain. They do a pain score, so zero to 10.

This guy had zero pain. And then they pushed insulin to drop his sugar, and his glucose was fine. And then he died three minutes later … I reviewed this chart and turned him in the medical board. Nothing. They didn’t do anything.”

• Profits over lives — In the end, Bowden believes that greed ultimately won out, with the COVID shots linked to the deaths of countless people:

“[W]e have hard facts showing it should be pulled off the market. I mean, any other product would have been pulled a long time ago. If this were an antibiotic and we’d seen all the carnage from an antibiotic, it would have been yanked off long ago. It should have been yanked off in the first month. There’s no other explanation than there’s just fraud, there’s corruption, there’s ego, there’s money. But it’s not science.”

Medical Freedom Is Constantly Under Threat

Recent victories for medical freedom, such as Idaho’s ban on jab mandates,3 demonstrate growing support for patient autonomy. Yet powerful medical organizations remain opposed to broad reforms.

• More like-minded politicians are needed — Bowden formed the Americans for Health Freedom to increasingly influence policy discussions, advocating strongly for the restoration and protection of medical freedoms:

“I started an organization called Americans for Health Freedom to try to find the politicians with moral courage to simply state that the COVID shot should be pulled off the market. It has been slow-growing, but we are up to 252 politicians who will go on record just to state that these shots should be pulled off the market.”

• Politicians have been bought — Rogan and Bowden agree that money has caused many politicians to stay quiet about the efficacy and safety of the shots, most likely because of Big Pharma’s bribery:

“[T]hese politicians are not getting these shots anymore and they’re not giving them to their kids, and yet they’re fine just staying quiet and not saying anything. They’re fine letting their constituents get these shots when we know all the complications, we know that it doesn’t work.

We know that the risk far outweighs the benefit, and the politicians are staying quiet. So, our goal is to support the ones who will speak up and get them more power.”

• Organizations continue to suppress free speech — Bowden frequently clashed with mainstream medical experts during the pandemic. She called out the Texas Medical Association, saying:

“They are anti-free speech for physicians. They are pro-mandate. They’ve gone after me, and they have a tight control over the people in our House and State. So, I just think we need to be careful. I mean, you saw it during the pandemic and the economy of our state is dominated by health, and people don’t realize that. They just think oil, but health is a huge dominating factor in our economy and, you saw what they did to me, what they’re still doing to me.”

The Best Ways to Protect Yourself

Despite the assault on physicians and patient medical freedom, Bowden hasn’t given up. Things are looking up, and she hopes that the new Health Secretary, Robert F. Kennedy Jr, “will save us all.” In the meantime, there are things you can do to protect yourself against the ever-evolving SARS-CoV-2 variants, as well as other diseases by boosting your immune system.

As noted in Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong’s interview with Tucker Carlson, your immune system is everything, especially against chronic diseases. However, many people have compromised immune function nowadays due to getting the shot. To rebuild your resilience, here are my recommendations:

1. Prioritize sleep — Ensure you’re getting at least seven to nine hours of high-quality sleep every night. Sleep is when your body heals and rejuvenates. Lack of proper sleep weakens your immune system and increases inflammation. But that’s not all — you also need to consider sleep quality. For simple, actionable fixes that will help you get the rest you need, read “Subtle Signs You Are Not Getting Enough Sleep.”

2. Dietary adjustments — Your diet plays a huge role in your overall health. If you’re eating unhealthy foods, it’s time to change. Limit ultraprocessed foods, refined sugar, and linoleic acid (LA), which is an inflammatory polyunsaturated fat (PUF). Focus instead on healthy carbohydrates to optimize your metabolic health and reduce immune-damaging inflammation.

3. Sunlight exposure — In a previous article, I noted that vitamin D from sunlight exposure helps prevent respiratory infections. I recommend you get daily sunlight exposure at solar noon, but only after you’ve been off vegetable oils for two to six months.

4. Add C15:0 fat to your diet — In relation to the point above, did you know that after you eat enough LA, it becomes embedded in your skin? Once it’s exposed to sunlight, inflammatory metabolites are produced, leading to increased risk of chronic disease and inflammation.

Taking 250 milligrams of pentadecanoic acid (C15:0) daily may help shorten the time it takes for your skin to safely interact with sunlight again, but emerging research suggests much larger doses may be even better.

The logic behind this strategy is to push out the existing LA from your tissues, replacing them with healthier fat. If you simply followed a low-LA diet, it would take two to three years for the strategy to work. But if you add C15:0, the LA clearance significantly shortens to 12 to 18 months. To understand this strategy in more detail, read “The Skin Microbiome Secret to Sun Protection and Radiant Health.”

5. Manage your stress — Chronic stress weakens your immune response due to elevated cortisol levels. Engage in daily stress-relief activities like meditation, deep breathing exercises, gentle yoga, or simply spending more time in nature. For more information, read “Key Strategies to Reduce Your Cortisol Levels.”

6. Don’t get the COVID shot — Given concerns raised by Bowden about serious side effects, opting out of the COVID jab and focusing instead on natural strategies to boost your immunity provides a safer, more effective approach.

If you or a loved one has already gotten the jab, I recommend you go over the I-RECOVER program by the Independent Medical Alliance (IMA), formerly known as the Front Line COVID-19 Critical Care Alliance (FLCCC). It provides extensive information about how to treat long COVID4 and post-jab injuries.5

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) About the Doctors During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Q: What was Bowden’s approach to COVID-19 testing and early treatment?

A: Bowden emphasized that early testing and intervention were crucial in saving lives during the pandemic. She implemented saliva-based PCR testing with a 24-hour turnaround, enabling faster diagnosis compared to the then-common two-week delays. She treated patients with monoclonal antibodies and ivermectin, and that early intervention kept thousands out of the hospital.

Q: Why did Bowden face backlash from the medical establishment?

A: Bowden publicly challenged the mainstream COVID-19 treatment protocols, questioned the shot safety, and promoted off-label use of ivermectin. As a result, she was targeted by medical boards and hospital administrators who allegedly acted on federal directives to suppress dissent. She claims that propaganda, financial incentives, and censorship motivated the backlash, not science.

Q: How did hospital protocols during the pandemic impact patient outcomes, according to Bowden?

A: Bowden criticized hospitals for over-reliance on ventilators, often administered without patient-specific evaluation. She alleges that some institutions essentially euthanized patients through unnecessary morphine and insulin use, and even withheld supportive care like breathing treatments. She argues that these decisions were driven by protocols, profit motives, and flawed incentives — not patient welfare.

Q: What role does Bowden believe government and pharmaceutical interests played in shaping the pandemic response?

A: She asserts there was a coordinated effort to suppress effective, low-cost treatments like ivermectin in favor of shot mandates. She points to initiatives like the $11.5 billion COVID-19 Community Corps, claiming it was used to spread propaganda and enforce censorship, while pharmaceutical interests influenced both policy and the public’s perception.

Q: What is Bowden’s stance on medical freedom and jab mandates today?

A: Bowden founded Americans for Health Freedom, an organization aimed at supporting politicians who oppose COVID-19 shot mandates and advocate for medical autonomy. She celebrates moves like Idaho’s decision on mandates and criticizes institutions like the Texas Medical Association for suppressing physician free speech.

A newly unsealed expert report from Danish physician and world-renowned research methodologist Dr. Peter C. Gøtzsche, reveals that Merck intentionally misrepresented the safety profile of its Gardasil HPV vaccine.

Editor’s note: Children’s Health Defense, which has been involved in Robi v. Merck & Co., the landmark Gardasil HPV vaccine lawsuit, is providing ongoing support for the suit.

In what could become one of the most explosive pharmaceutical lawsuits in U.S. history, Robi v. Merck & Co., centered on the Gardasil human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine, is set to resume in Los Angeles in September.

At the core of the case are allegations that Merck misrepresented the safety profile of Gardasil — allegations now supported by powerful evidence.

A newly unsealed expert report from Danish physician and world-renowned research methodologist Dr. Peter C. Gøtzsche, submitted as part of the pre-trial motion, underpins the claims against Merck.

His 350-page forensic analysis — now part of the official court record — lays bare a chilling narrative of clinical trial rigging, regulatory failure and global deception.

According to Gøtzsche, Merck distorted its clinical trial data so thoroughly that the results were rendered scientifically meaningless.

Gøtzsche’s assessment is stark and unequivocal.

“The Merck-sponsored trials cannot be used to properly assess the harms of the vaccines,” he writes, adding that the company “squandered the opportunity to legitimately study the safety of Gardasil.”

After examining 112,000 pages of regulatory documents, Gøtzsche concluded that Merck manipulated its data to such an extent that it would be “difficult if not impossible” for any independent scientist — or even government regulators — to accurately assess the vaccine’s harms.

It now raises the fundamental question: Were millions of adolescents misled into consenting to a vaccine whose true safety risks were deliberately obscured?

Trials designed to mislead

From the outset, Gøtzsche argues that Merck engineered its clinical trials not to detect harms, but to mask them.

Rather than using an inert placebo, such as saline solution, the gold standard in clinical research, Merck used an aluminium-based adjuvant as the control in all but two small trials.

Aluminium adjuvants are known neurotoxins that trigger immune responses and can cause local and systemic side effects on their own.

“It is indefensible that Merck avoided comparing its vaccine with placebo,” Gøtzsche writes.

This tactic had a clear purpose: to minimize the appearance of adverse effects by ensuring that the “control” group would experience side effects similar to the vaccinated group, making the vaccine seem safer by comparison.

Even the World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that using an active comparator like an adjuvant instead of a true placebo “makes it difficult to assess the harms of a vaccine.”

Only under pressure from regulators did Merck conduct two small trials using a saline placebo.

And those two trials — marked with a red box below — showed a significantly greater incidence of harm compared to trials that used an aluminium adjuvant or a comparator vaccine as the “placebo.”

In short, Gøtzsche’s assessment was that these trials were designed to deceive.

Concealing harms by slicing the data

Beyond trial design, Gøtzsche details how Merck systematically manipulated the recording and reporting of adverse events.

Participants were monitored for harms for just 14 days following each vaccine dose — a relatively short window. Autoimmune reactions and other vaccine-related harms can take weeks or months to emerge, and sometimes years to diagnose, as in the case of conditions like postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS).

If an adverse event occurred outside this 14-day window, it was not counted as a vaccine-related effect, but reclassified as a “new medical history,” obscuring any connection to the vaccine.

“By calling adverse events ‘new medical history,’ Merck not only concealed important adverse events but also their severity,” Gøtzsche explains.

Reactions that occurred outside the short observation window were excluded unless they were classified as serious — such as being life-threatening or resulting in disability, hospitalization or permanent damage — but even some of these reactions were omitted by Merck from its reports.

As a result, thousands of adverse events that could have revealed patterns of harm were systematically excluded from the final analysis.

This was not a matter of simply taking their eye off the ball — it was a calculated strategy by Merck.

The disappearing harms

One of the most striking sections of Gøtzsche’s report concerns Merck’s handling of results from Study P001, one of the largest clinical trials for Gardasil.

In this trial, over 14,000 participants were enrolled to compare the original Gardasil vaccine with its newer version, Gardasil 9, which contains twice the amount of adjuvant and five more disease antigens than Gardasil.

The trial data showed that 3.3% of participants receiving Gardasil 9 experienced a serious adverse event compared to 2.6% of those who received the original Gardasil.

Merck dismissed the difference as “low and comparable.”

But Gøtzsche’s analysis revealed that this increase was statistically significant. He calculated that for every 141 people vaccinated with Gardasil 9, one would suffer a serious adverse event — a rate he described as “alarming.”

Navigating the data for this study was no small feat. Gøtzsche describes the trial documents — running over 8,734 pages — as dense, disorganized and deliberately structured to obscure critical findings.

“Important results might easily pass unnoticed,” he warns.

In his view, Merck didn’t simply fail to investigate vaccine harms — it actively constructed barriers to hide them from public scrutiny.

Collage of events

Post-market red flags ignored

After Gardasil’s release onto the global market, reports of serious side effects began to surface — particularly cases involving neurological syndromes such as POTS and complex regional pain syndrome.

Rather than conducting independent reviews, regulatory agencies like the European Medicines Agency (EMA) relied on Merck’s internal analyses to assess whether these conditions might be linked to the vaccine.

However, Gøtzsche highlights that Merck’s database searches were narrowly defined and poorly constructed — effectively ensuring that many relevant cases would not even be captured in the search for key terms.

“The EMA’s official report did not mention that the search strategies the manufacturers used to search their databases were inadequate and must have overlooked many cases,” Gøtzsche writes.

Rather than challenging these deficient analyses, regulators accepted them at face value. Gøtzsche calls this what it is — regulatory failure.

“It is remarkable that drug regulators accepted Merck’s contradictory, biased and misleading reports based on trials that were already flawed by design,” he says.

The erosion of informed consent

For Gøtzsche, these issues go beyond mere scientific misconduct — they represent a profound violation of medical ethics.

Participants in the trials were lied to; they were told they were receiving a placebo when in fact they were injected with an aluminium adjuvant. Nor were they adequately informed of the true scope of potential harms associated with the vaccine.

Without honest disclosure, Gøtzsche argues, informed consent — the bedrock of ethical clinical research — was denied.

Millions of adolescents and their families made decisions based on safety data that were incomplete, selectively reported, or actively concealed.

This isn’t just a scientific scandal. It is a betrayal of public trust.

Regulators weren’t just passive — they were complicit

Gøtzsche’s report also shines a harsh light on the regulatory agencies tasked with protecting public health, including the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the EMA.

“It is well known that regulatory agencies are understaffed, which means it is unlikely they would be able to undertake a thorough review of Merck’s data as presented,” Gøtzsche notes.

When concerns about Gardasil’s safety prompted a formal review in Denmark in 2015, the EMA largely relied on Merck’s self-submitted data to reassure the public.

But buried deep within those submissions were warnings that regulators either missed or chose to overlook.

According to Gøtzsche, this was not simply a failure of vigilance, it reflected a systemic breakdown in regulatory oversight.

A reckoning for public health

The Robi v. Merck lawsuit could mark a historic turning point in pharmaceutical accountability. The case is not just about one vaccine or one company — it is about the broader mechanisms by which drugs are tested, approved and marketed around the world.

If proven, Merck’s conduct would not merely represent corporate misconduct, but a collapse in the systems designed to protect public health.

The Merck-sponsored trials “cannot be trusted,” Gøtzsche concludes.

That simple but devastating conclusion may reverberate far beyond this lawsuit.

If this case succeeds, it could force a long-overdue reckoning — one that reinstates transparency, scientific integrity and the right of every patient to make a fully informed choice.

For now, one urgent question remains — how many were harmed because the truth was hidden?

STORY AT-A-GLANCE

  • Dr. Suzanne Humphries challenges conventional vaccine narratives, arguing that improvements in sanitation and nutrition, not vaccines, were primarily responsible for declining disease rates
  • Humphries’ journey from kidney specialist to vaccine researcher began after noticing patterns of kidney failure in patients following flu vaccination
  • The 1986 National Childhood Vaccine Injury Act shields vaccine manufacturers from lawsuits, prioritizing profit over rigorous safety testing
  • Early vaccines contained contaminants like SV40, a cancer-causing monkey virus that entered polio vaccines through production methods using monkey kidneys
  • Humphries emphasizes the importance of avoiding dogmatic thinking about vaccines, advocating for open-minded examination of medical practices

Joe Rogan recently sat down with Dr. Suzanne Humphries, co-author of “Dissolving Illusions: Disease, Vaccines, and the Forgotten History,” one of my favorite books on vaccines.1 I previously interviewed Humphries about how vaccine science has been misrepresented to portray them as safe and effective, when in reality they’re neither.

She absolutely crushed it in this Rogan interview! I honestly don’t think anyone in history has laid out such a clear, convincing, and downright compelling case about the vaccine downsides. After decades of grinding away, her hard work’s finally getting the spotlight it deserves, and I’m beyond thrilled to have written the forward to her fantastic book.

Rogan also asked Humphries questions about the history, science and real impact of vaccines, and she didn’t hold back with her answers. Their conversation challenges conventional narratives about vaccines, explores the efficacy of natural remedies and uncovers an important history of medicine that is often overlooked.

The Importance of an Open Mind

Rogan opens the episode by emphasizing a key principle: avoiding dogma. “You can’t be dogmatic when you’re talking about vaccines — or about anything,” he says, advocating for a flexible, 360-degree perspective rather than the tunnel vision often fostered by indoctrination. Humphries agrees, noting that intentional and profitable indoctrination has shaped public perception of medical practices.

• Beneficial practices are often unfairly dismissed — Rogan praises “Dissolving Illusions” for highlighting the use of natural remedies like cinnamon, which are often discredited as “hippie nonsense.” Humphries explains that cinnamon, a powerful herb, contains significant vitamin C, a nutrient she believes underpinned the effectiveness of many traditional remedies.

She recalls dismissing such ideas early in her career, only to later recognize their value. Garlic, too, emerges as a standout, effective against staph infections without fostering drug resistance — a stark contrast to engineered pharmaceuticals.

• This shift in perspective — from skepticism to appreciation — mirrors a broader theme — The conventional medical establishment has a tendency to reject natural solutions in favor of standardized, profitable interventions. Humphries argues that doctors should recommend these remedies alongside conventional treatments, citing, for example, vitamin D and vitamin A as important yet underutilized tools.

Vaccines and Vitamin A — A Hidden Connection

The conversation pivots to a striking revelation about the measles vaccine. Humphries explains that both natural measles infection and the vaccine deplete vitamin A levels in the body. “They don’t tell you that,” she says, noting that post-vaccination advice often only recommends Tylenol, which she notes impairs immune response and causes “immunological disturbances.”

• The medical system prioritizes standardized procedures over holistic care — This vitamin A depletion, Humphries argues, should prompt vitamin A supplementation to be recommended along with the measles shot, but this advice is absent from standard protocols. This point underscores a recurring critique of the medical system focusing on disease care instead of health care.

• Variability in vaccine production contributes to inconsistent outcomes — This problem is made worse by legal immunity granted to vaccine manufacturers. Rogan probes this further, asking if the 1986 National Childhood Vaccine Injury Act, which shields vaccine companies from lawsuits, fueled this variability.

Humphries traces the precedent to the 1976 swine flu vaccine fiasco, where injuries forced the government to absorb liability, setting the stage for 1986’s broader measure.

• Post-1986, vaccine makers prioritized profit over safety — They introduced vaccine enhancers, or adjuvants, like aluminum and, eventually, mRNA technology. The legal protection afforded under the 1986 Act, she contends, allowed companies to prioritize profit over rigorous safety testing, a theme that reverberates throughout their discussion.

The Polio Paradox — Vaccines or Sanitation?

Polio remains the poster child for vaccine success, but Humphries challenges this narrative with a detailed historical analysis. Rogan asks what caused polio’s decline, questioning the vaccine’s role. Humphries responds that the facts don’t align with popular belief. “Polio is still here,” she asserts, rebranded as conditions like Guillain-Barré syndrome — diagnostic criteria shifted post-vaccine to mask its persistence.

• Environmental factors — pesticides like DDT, arsenic and lead — are primary culprits — DDT production, she notes, mirrored polio outbreaks, with rural communities exposed through livestock dipping and crop spraying. “Arsenic causes the exact same spinal pathology,” she says, citing medical references that link these toxins to symptoms attributed to polio.

• Up to 95% to 99% of polio cases are asymptomatic — This suggests it’s a virus naturally present and benign in healthy individuals. Humphries cites a study of the Xavante Indians in South America, where nearly all tested had immunity to polio strains without paralysis, implying robust natural immunity negated its threat.

Rogan marvels at this, pointing out that viruses often weaken on their own and become less harmful over time — yet human interventions, like the 1916 Rockefeller lab’s engineered polio strain, made it more deadly.

• The threat of vaccine-derived polio — This is particularly related to oral vaccines still used in India and Israel. These live strains, she says, caused more paralytic cases than they prevented in early trials, a fact obscured by redefined diagnostics and propaganda. This complexity dismantles the simplistic “vaccine eradicated polio” story, pointing instead to sanitation, nutrition and reduced toxin exposure as key drivers of its decline.

Smallpox — A Tale of Sanitation and Suffering

Smallpox, another supposed vaccine triumph, faces similar scrutiny. Humphries describes its vaccine as a crude concoction of animal pus — often from cows, horses or cadavers — mixed with glycerin and dubbed “pure lymph.”

• Far from pure, these vaccines harbored bacteria and fungi — Contamination persisted into the 20th century. Rogan is incredulous: “Can you believe that fairy tale?” he asks, as Humphries details how these vaccines spread disease, including tuberculosis, a side effect she dubs “the white plague.”

• Public health conditions amplified smallpox’s toll — Rogan paints a vivid picture: streets awash with feces, no running water and rampant malnutrition. Humphries agrees, noting that in the late 1600s, smallpox was “one of the easiest diseases to treat” with supportive care. The Industrial Revolution worsened conditions, cramming people into filthy slums where disease thrived.

Death rates, she argues, plummeted not due to vaccines but alongside improvements in water, shelter and labor laws. Death rates from conditions like diarrhea, which had no vaccine, also declined during this time.

• Doctors of the era often worsened outcomes with toxic treatments — Mercury, arsenic and bloodletting were prescribed until vomiting or diarrhea ensued. These “purges,” meant to expel illness, instead debilitated patients. Yet, natural remedies like apple cider vinegar showed promise, with historical reports of doctors using it to prevent smallpox infection — a practice echoing its modern resurgence for gut health.

Natural Remedies Reclaimed

The dismissal of natural remedies frustrates both Rogan and Humphries. “The hippies seem to have got it right,” Rogan quips. Humphries recounts treating tetanus — a vaccine-targeted disease — with vitamin C and wound care, achieving better outcomes than in vaccinated cases. Studies, she says, show vitamin C prevents tetanus in rabbits if administered early, challenging the vaccine’s necessity.

• Breast milk emerges as a nutritional powerhouse — This food is rich in stem cells, immune factors and memory T-cells that confer cellular immunity. Humphries laments its replacement by formula, a profitable industry that downplays these benefits. Rogan agrees, decrying the arrogance of assuming artificial substitutes match nature’s design.

• Vitamins A, D and C recur as unsung heroes — Humphries ties vitamin A deficiency to vaccine side effects, vitamin D to immune resilience and vitamin C deficiency to hospital-acquired scurvy and more. “Most people are walking around with subclinical scurvy,” she warns, worsened by stress, smoking and poor diets — conditions vaccines can’t fix.

The Dark Side of Vaccine Production

How do contaminants like SV40, a cancer-causing monkey virus, end up in vaccines? Humphries explains the process: vaccines require living tissue — rotten meat for tetanus, monkey kidneys for polio, E. coli for COVID-19 mRNA shots.

SV40, harmless in monkeys, infiltrated polio vaccines via African green monkey kidneys, and remained undetected until Dr. Bernice Eddy flagged it in the 1950s. Eddy’s warnings were ignored and suppressed, and contaminated stocks persisted into the 1990s.

• Now transmissible among humans, SV40 enhances cancer-promoting genes — It also inhibits cancer-suppressing genes, driving kidney, brain and lung tumors. Humphries links its introduction to rising cancer rates.

Rogan is stunned: “How could they keep injecting that into people?” Humphries cites suppression — “any doubts … must not be allowed to exist” — and profit motives, noting research into SV40’s long-term effects was axed despite clear correlations.

• COVID shots contain compounds that amplify side effects — These effects include blood clots and stem cell loss in placentas. These issues went unreported amid media silence. This opacity, Humphries argues, reflects a system that prioritizes industry over inquiry.

A Doctor’s Awakening

Humphries’ journey from kidney doctor to advocate began with the 2008-2009 flu vaccine, which she linked to kidney failure in her patients. “We’re not told to take a vaccine history,” she says, yet patterns emerged. Many patients experienced high blood pressure and dialysis post-vaccination. Her requests to delay shots for chemotherapy patients were rebuffed, sparking her research into polio, smallpox and beyond.

• Humphries went on to co-author “Dissolving Illusions” — The book was self-published after multiple rejections. The book, now in eight languages, challenges vaccine efficacy with statistics showing death rates dropped before widespread vaccination, driven by improved sanitation and nutrition. Threats followed, but she remains undeterred, determined to spread the word.

• Rogan, once a vaccine advocate, credits Humphries’ book with shattering his illusions — “I would have told you vaccines saved us from polio,” he admits, now seeing propaganda’s power. Humphries, meanwhile, urges a return to healing’s roots — nutrition, natural remedies and patient-centered care.

• This conversation isn’t anti-science; it’s a call for true science — It’s time for open, unbiased debate, unshackled from profit and dogma. Humphries invites us to question, explore and reclaim health through knowledge, not blind trust. For more, visit dissolvingillusions.com, where Humphries’ work continues to challenge and enlighten.

FAQs About Vaccines

Q: What is the main argument against the conventional narrative of vaccines?

A: The widely accepted belief that vaccines are solely responsible for the decline of diseases like polio and smallpox is oversimplified. Improved sanitation, better nutrition and natural remedies played significant roles in reducing disease rates.

Q: How does vitamin A relate to vaccines, particularly the measles vaccine?

A: Both natural measles infection and the measles vaccine deplete vitamin A levels in the body, which may lead to negative health effects. Humphries highlights that this depletion is rarely mentioned in standard medical advice, which often limits post-vaccination recommendations to Tylenol. She argues that vitamin A supplementation should be advised alongside the measles vaccine to support immune health, a practice currently overlooked.

Q: What are the concerns about vaccine production and legal immunity?

A: Variability in vaccine production results in inconsistent safety and efficacy outcomes. The legal immunity granted to vaccine manufacturers through the 1986 National Childhood Vaccine Injury Act, which protects them from lawsuits, is also problematic. This legal shield has allowed vaccine manufacturers to prioritize innovation and profit over thorough safety testing, putting public health at risk.

Q: What are some of the issues with smallpox vaccines?

A: Early smallpox vaccines were crude, made from animal pus and often contaminated with bacteria and fungi, spreading diseases like tuberculosis. Smallpox declined primarily due to improvements in sanitation, living conditions and nutrition — not the vaccine.

Q: What is SV40 and how did it end up in vaccines?

A: SV40 is a cancer-causing monkey virus that contaminated polio vaccines in the 1950s and 1960s. It entered the vaccines because they were produced using monkey kidneys, and the virus went undetected until later flagged by Dr. Bernice Eddy. Despite warnings, contaminated vaccines were used for years, contributing to increased cancer rates. This is as example of flaws in vaccine production and oversight.

lab grown milk

STORY AT-A-GLANCE

  • Lab-grown “UnReal Milk” is being developed by Brown Foods using mammalian cells in bioreactors. It’s marketed as environmentally friendly despite lacking comprehensive safety testing
  • Other companies like Perfect Day are creating synthetic dairy alternatives that also lack long-term safety data while making questionable environmental claims
  • Raw milk from grass fed cows contains essential nutrients like C15:0 fat that support mitochondrial health, diabetes prevention, and weight management not found in synthetic alternatives
  • The push for lab-made food isn’t about providing options but replacing traditional food sources, thus removing consumer control over what they consume
  • Take control of your health by buying from local farms, avoiding lab-grown foods, understanding ingredients, supporting real food with purchasing power, and advocating for food freedom policies

Unpasteurized cow’s milk is an incredibly important food. It contains a great mix of fats, carbohydrates, proteins, and other nutrients that support you from birth, all the way into adulthood. Now, biotechnology companies are attempting to cash in by producing fake milk. But as you’ll learn soon enough, it doesn’t hold a candle to the real thing — raw milk from grass fed cows.

Lab-Made Milk Is Being Engineered to Replace the Real Thing

A report published by Investigate Midwest looked into Brown Foods, a biotech startup claiming to have created the world’s first lab-grown milk, dubbed “UnReal Milk.”1

• UnReal Milk is fully lab-grown — Unlike plant-based milk substitutes or fermented dairy analogs, this product is not made from soy, oats, or nuts. Instead, mammalian cells grown in controlled laboratory conditions are coaxed to produce the core nutrients found in cow’s milk. According to Brown Foods, their product mimics real milk at a molecular level and could quickly appear in grocery stores if regulatory approvals are granted.

But don’t be fooled. This isn’t about giving consumers another dairy-free option. It’s about slowly replacing traditional food with synthetic versions that are entirely lab-engineered. In the case of Brown Foods, they’re claiming that UnReal Milk contains the exact same proteins, fats, and carbohydrates that make up 99% of real cow’s milk.

• Fake milk is just the starting point — Brown Foods is not stopping at customers who drink milk. They say their product can also be turned into cheese, butter, and ice cream.

• The company claims the environmental benefits are massive — According to Brown Foods’ data, UnReal Milk uses 90% less water, 95% less land, and emits 82% less carbon than traditional dairy farming.

While those numbers sound impressive at first glance, they aren’t being compared against small, regenerative farms with pasture-raised cows. It’s a comparison against concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs),2 which means Brown Foods is intentionally avoiding comparing its product against sustainable dairy operations.

• What’s missing from Brown Foods’ pitch is real-world testing — UnReal Milk is not yet approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) or the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). There are no long-term studies showing what happens in the body when people consume milk made by lab-grown mammalian cells.

There are no data on digestive effects, allergenicity, hormonal activity, or what’s left behind after processing. Still, the company is pushing hard for consumer tasting events by the end of 2025 and expects to begin market trials as early as 2026.

When a food product is radically new, the lack of transparency should concern you. Brown Foods has released no clinical safety data, no nutritional bioavailability tests, and no allergy risk assessments. They are, however, rolling out the red carpet for venture capitalists, environmental PR campaigns, and lobbying efforts to ease the regulatory burden.

Fake Milk Poses Dangers to Human Health

This isn’t the first time that a company has attempted to introduce fake milk in the market for mass consumption. In 2021, I wrote about Perfect Day, a company that uses genetically engineered (GE) Trichoderma reesei fungus to produce synthetic versions of casein and whey, which are dairy proteins.

• How Perfect Day produces GE whey — The technology doesn’t involve dairy cows, grass, or even sunlight. Just like Brown Foods, Perfect Day places the fungi in sterile tanks. These tanks are “closed systems isolated from the outside world,” according to the company’s own words.3

In plain terms, that means no exposure to natural ecosystems, no relationship to the soil or the land. Just machinery, microbes, and sugar water. The end product is synthetic milk proteins, which are later combined with fats, water, vitamins, and additives to mimic the texture and flavor of real dairy.

• Safety isn’t proven — Even more concerning, Perfect Day’s founders openly admit that their microbes require tightly controlled, artificial environments to function properly. “We can ensure we’re making the purest, safest milk proteins in the world,” the company claims. But how will your body respond to their lab-built proteins? No one knows, because there’s no long-term safety data.

• Perfect Day is also selling the story of sustainability — According to their internal lifecycle analysis, their synthetic whey protein emits 85% to 97% fewer greenhouse gases than traditional dairy production.

But just like Brown Foods, the comparison is made only against factory-farmed dairy systems, not against small-scale regenerative or pasture-raised operations. By ignoring the most sustainable forms of real dairy, the industry paints a misleading picture of what “green” truly means.

• The fake food industry is going after infant formula — In 2022, I also wrote about BIOMILQ, a startup company by Bill Gates, which uses biotechnology to create lab-made human milk for babies. Specifically, the company uses mammary epithelial cells placed in flasks with cell culture media. These cells are then grown in a bioreactor to produce milk.

• Lab-grown food poses dangers to the environment — In February 2021, the Good Food Institute (GFI), a nonprofit group behind the alternative protein industry, released a techno-economic analysis of cultivated meat, which was prepared by consulting firm CE Delft.4

In it, they developed a model to reduce the current costs of cultured meat production down to a point that would make it economically feasible in full-scale plants by 2030, a model they said is “feasible.”

However, GFI’s own analysts conceded regarding the environmental effects. According to a report from The Counter, “GFI’s own life-cycle analysis found that cultivated meat could have worse climate impacts than some forms of chicken and pork if conventional energy is used.”5

• We already have enough food — Farmer and historian John Lewis-Stempel points out that the world’s farmers already produce enough food for the global population. According to his article from UnHerd, “[A]ny discussion of global food policy needs to begin with one plain fact: there is … no actual food shortage. Already, the planet’s farmers produce enough food to cater for the projected 10 billion humans of 2050. The problem is waste and distribution.”6

• A silver lining in the production of fake food — For all the current hype around fake food, there’s a silver lining — the industry is experiencing notable roadblocks. According to a report by The Business Journals, published on February 12, BIOMILQ has filed for bankruptcy. Its technology and assets are stuck in a litigation limbo, giving us a reprieve from the assault of this fake food.7

Raw Milk Trumps Fake Milk

While fake milk startups paint their products as a sustainable alternative, the lack of real-world testing puts their claims in a questionable light. They believe that their products have all fats, but they fall short of full-fat, raw milk because it contains a rare essential fat — pentadecanoic acid, aka C15:0.

C15:0 is an odd-chain saturated fat (OCFA) primarily found in dairy (it’s also present in smaller amounts in certain fish and plants). What’s notable about this OCFA is that it contributes to optimal cellular health. While it isn’t as well-known as other beneficial fats, I believe that C15:0 deserves a special mention — and it reinforces the goodness of raw, grass fed milk.

• Diabetes prevention — A meta-analysis8 of 33 prospective cohort studies found that people with higher C15:0 levels had a lower risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.

• Mitochondrial health — Research found that C15:0 helped repair mitochondrial function and lowered reactive oxygen species production in a dose-dependent u-curve.9

• Weight management — Daily supplementation of C15:0 at a dose of 5 mg per kilo of bodyweight lowered inflammation, glucose and cholesterol levels in obese mice.10

• LA detoxification — Research shows that people diagnosed with Alzheimer’s generally have elevated levels of oxidized linoleic acid metabolites (OXLAMs) in their blood plasma.11 OXLAMs create systemic inflammation and impair mitochondrial function, resulting in ferroptosis — an iron-dependent type of cell death linked to neurodegeneration.12

How does C15:0 fit into this? As it turns out, this fat helps stop the process by displacing linoleic acid from your cell membranes, thereby reducing lipid peroxidation and stabilizing cellular structures before damage occurs. These findings are compiled in a study I wrote, which I will be sharing more about in the near future.

Real Food Is Always the Superior Choice

The introduction of UnReal Milk is only the beginning. What comes next is a reshaping of how dairy, and food more broadly, is created and consumed. Again, the push for these technologies isn’t about adding another option — it’s about replacing what you eat altogether. However, don’t lose hope; you are still in control of what you eat. Here are my recommendations to help you retain your food freedom:

1. Buy from local farms whenever possible — If you’re lucky enough to live near a local farm, this is your best option. When you buy your meat, milk, and cheese directly from small farms, you’re cutting off the lifeline to fake food empires. Farmers markets are a great place to start.

Once you’re there, ask farmers about their practices, like how the animals are raised and what they’re fed. If you’re a parent looking for a clean source of dairy, look for pasture-raised cows.

2. Avoid lab-grown foods in all forms — Skip the mass-produced ice cream, the “animal-free” dairy, and any food product made using genetically engineered fungi or cell cultures. These products aren’t clean and won’t do any good for your health. They’re built in sterile tanks, filled with unknown residues, and classified as “safe” through regulatory loopholes.

If you’re reading labels and see terms like “precision fermentation,” “animal-free whey,” or “recombinant casein,” put it back on the shelf.

3. Get to know your ingredients again — You don’t need biotech formulas when you understand how to nourish your body using real food. Start with the basics — eggs from pasture-raised hens, full-fat dairy from grass fed cows, meat from regeneratively raised animals, and produce grown without chemicals. If you’re someone who’s been eating processed foods, it’s time to simplify and return to real, whole foods.

4. Speak with your dollars, not just your voice — Every dollar you spend is a vote towards the fight against Big Ag and Big Dairy. Stop funding companies that are replacing farmers with patent holders and swapping natural processes with gene editing. Don’t just avoid their products — stop supporting their brands and educate others about the dangers.

Redirect your spending toward farm co-ops, community-supported agriculture (CSA) programs, and regenerative operations.

5. Support food freedom in your community — Pay attention to laws in your state. Florida, Alabama, Arizona, and Tennessee have already taken steps to block lab-grown meat,13 and as noted by Investigate Midwest, Nebraska is set to do the same.

If you’re someone who cares about your right to choose real food, this is the moment to act. Write to your state representatives. Support policies that protect small farms and transparency in food labeling. You don’t need biotech products forced into your kitchen under the disguise of sustainability. Real sustainability lies in regenerative practices that do not make use of any synthetic or artificial, lab-grown techniques.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) About Lab-Grown Milk and Its Safety Concerns

Q: What is UnReal Milk and how is it different from traditional milk?

A: UnReal Milk is a fully lab-grown dairy product created by the biotech startup Brown Foods. Unlike plant-based substitutes made from soy, oats, or nuts, UnReal Milk is produced by mammalian cells grown in lab bioreactors. These cells are designed to replicate the proteins, fats, and carbohydrates found in real cow’s milk at a molecular level.

However, it lacks the connection to natural ecosystems, traditional farming, and certain essential nutrients found in raw, grass fed dairy.

Q: Are lab-grown milk products safe and well-tested?

A: Currently, there is no FDA or USDA approval for UnReal Milk or similar products. These lab-grown alternatives lack long-term human studies on digestive impact, allergenicity, hormonal effects, or nutritional bioavailability. Despite their claims of being molecularly identical to natural milk, their safety has not been clinically validated, raising concerns about their suitability for consumption without transparent testing and oversight.

Q: How do biotech companies justify lab-grown milk, and are the sustainability claims reliable?

A: Companies like Brown Foods and Perfect Day argue that lab-grown dairy products are environmentally superior, citing reductions in water use, land use, and greenhouse gas emissions. However, these claims are based solely on comparisons with conventional factory-farmed dairy, not regenerative or small-scale pasture-based systems. This paints a misleading picture and ignores the benefits of traditional, sustainable farming practices.

Q: What are the health concerns associated with lab-made milk and dairy proteins?

A: Lab-grown dairy relies on genetically engineered organisms and sterile bioreactors, raising concerns about artificial additives, microbial residues, and synthetic processing. The synthetic process also highlights the absence of C15:0, a beneficial fat in real milk shown to support cellular health, mitochondrial function, diabetes prevention, and weight management.

Without real-world data, there’s uncertainty around how lab-engineered milk interacts with the human body long-term.

Q: What actions can consumers take to support real food and resist lab-grown alternatives?

A: Buy local food from regenerative farms, avoid lab-grown products, and support food transparency laws. Consumers are also encouraged to read ingredient labels carefully (watch for terms like “precision fermentation” or “animal-free dairy”), invest in whole, natural foods, and support legislation that defends food freedom and opposes the replacement of natural agriculture with synthetic biotech.

Victorian government loses fight to keep Covid health advice hidden

Victorian Premier during Covid times, Dan Andrews. Image: Herald Sun.

In news this week, the incredible lengths taken by the Victorian government to hide the health advice on which its extremist Covid policies were supposedly based.

The Herald Sun reports,

The Victorian government has lost its bid to keep secret the coronavirus briefings used to justify sending Victorians into the world’s longest lockdown.

The Court of Appeal on Thursday refused the Department of Health’s application for leave to appeal a landmark Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal ruling in June last year to hand over the documents to Liberal [conservative] MP David Davis.

Mr Davis had been fighting for the release of the documents, including emails behind lockdown decisions between then-Public Health Commander Finn Romanes, and the chief health officer Brett Sutton, since first lodging a Freedom of Information [FOI] request in September 2020.

The state government now has to hand over the documents, unless it takes its appeal to a higher court. A Victorian government spokesperson said the Department of Health would “take the appropriate time to consider the court’s judgment.”

Over the past five years, the Victorian government seriously argued that the requested briefing documents were “not in the public interest” in its effort to keep them under lock and key.

Other excuses proffered included that releasing the requested documents would inhibit senior public officers from speaking freely in future written communications, and that “the work involved in processing the request would substantially and unreasonably divert the resources of the agency from its other operations.”

Several government officials pulled the same trick that the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) used to try to obstruct the release of Pfizer Covid vaccine trial data, claiming impossibly long timeframes for the release of the requested briefing documents, which are estimated to total approximately 7,000 pages.

From News.com.au,

Then Covid-19 response commander Jeroen Weimar claimed it would take an estimated 169.4 to 208.4 working weeks (about four years) to process Mr Davis’ combined FOI requests, in a statement dated October 2021.

Michael Cain, the department’s manager of FOI and legal compliance, then claimed it would take 61 to 74 work weeks, in a statement dated November 2023. He argued the cost would run into tens of thousands of dollars.

Unable to force release of the documents via the FOI process, MP David Davis, leader of the opposition in the Upper House, took the matter to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT).

Victorian Leader of the Opposition in the Upper House, David Davis. Image: Herald Sun.

In May 2024 he won, with VCAT Judge Caitlin English ordering the government to release the documents due to a “high degree of public interest” and the fact that processing the request would not substantially or unreasonably divert the resources of the Health Department from its other operations.

Apparently desperate to keep the briefing documents under lock and key, the government sought leave to appeal the decision, but the appeal was refused.

More than 115 briefs supporting the left-wing Labor government’s public health orders should now be released, reportedly averaging 40 to 60 pages each.

At the height of the pandemic, Victorians under former Premier Dan Andrews’ leadership were subjected to curfews, masking and vaccine mandates, were not allowed to go further than 5km from home, were confined to zones under the ‘ring of steel’ policy, and were locked down for over 260 days, the longest cumulative total in the world.

Victorians are still living with the effects of these policies, saddled with over $150 billion of lockdown-driven debt, learning loss among school-aged children, and ongoing mental health impacts.

A Melbourne resident in the infamous public housing tower lockdown. Image: BBC.

Nearly three-quarters of Victorians supported the Andrews government’s extreme measures in the first year of the pandemic, polling shows.

However by 2024, only half of Victorians thought the Andrews government handled the pandemic well, according to a recent report by the Australian Human Rights Commission.

The report details a plethora of human rights infringements, including the government banning protests, arresting and charging pregnant mother-of-three Zoe Buhler for a social media post, and the confinement of thousands of Melbourne residents in public housing flats under police guard.

The Andrews’ government’s response to complaints over its pandemic police carnage was always that it made ‘no apologies for saving lives.’ Under Andrews’ successor Jacinta Allen, the Labor government has continued in this vein.

If there’s really nothing to apologise for, then the Victorian government should have no qualms about releasing its top secret health advice.

The risk of permanent disability or death from the MMR vaccine may be greater than the risk from a measles, mumps or rubella infection because large enough vaccine safety studies haven’t been done, according to a collection of new documents released by Physicians for Informed Consent.

word "risk" and mmr vaccine

The risk of permanent disability or death from the MMR vaccine may be greater than the risk posed by measles, mumps or rubella infection because large enough vaccine safety studies haven’t been done, according to a collection of new documents released by Physicians for Informed Consent (PIC).

The collection includes disease information statements for measles, mumps and rubella, and a vaccine risk statement for the MMR vaccine.

According to the Mayo Clinic, measles is a viral infection typically accompanied by a skin rash, fever, cough, runny nose, sore throat, inflamed eyes and tiny white spots on the inner cheek.

Mumps and rubella also are viral infections. According to PIC, all three viral infections typically resolve on their own with proper rest and hydration in almost all cases.

Dr. Shira Miller, PIC’s founder and president, told The Defender, “The main takeaway is that the MMR vaccine has not been proven safer than measles, mumps and rubella.”

PIC is a nonprofit that delivers data to doctors and the public so they can “evaluate the data on infectious diseases and vaccines objectively, and voluntarily engage in informed decision-making about vaccination.”

Miller explained that the MMR vaccine clinical trials didn’t include enough subjects to be able to prove that the risk of permanent disability or death from the vaccine is less than the risk of permanent disability or death from measles, mumps or rubella.

The number of measles, mumps or rubella infections that result in permanent disability or death is so low that researchers would need to have at least 50,000 subjects in a clinical trial to be able to show that the vaccine is safer than the disease.

The MMR vaccine’s clinical trials fall very short of that benchmark, according to PIC’s statement on MMR vaccine risk.

Prelicensure clinical trials for vaccines, including the MMR shot, are “relatively small and usually last no longer than a few years,” according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) 2024 “Manual for the Surveillance of Vaccine-Preventable Diseases.”

The 2024 edition of the CDC manual doesn’t specify exactly how many subjects are in these “relatively small” trials. However, the 2011 edition stated that “relatively small” meant that such trials are “usually limited to a few thousand subjects.”

The rate of disability or death among healthy children from any of those three diseases is incredibly rare. PIC wrote:

“For children under age 10 at normal risk (i.e., with normal levels of vitamin A and infected after birth), the pre-vaccine annual risk of death or permanent disability from measles, mumps, and rubella respectively was 1 in 1 million, 1 in 1.6 million, and 1 in 2.1 million. …

“Therefore, the cumulative annual risk of a fatal or permanently disabling case of any of those diseases was about 1 in 500,000, and the risk over a 10-year span was 1 in 50,000.”

In other words, clinical trials would need at least 50,000 subjects to detect one case of death or disability from a measles, mumps or rubella infection.

Meanwhile, no safety studies on the MMR vaccine have been done that looked for possible genetic mutations, impaired fertility or cancer, according to the product’s package insert.

Also, seizures from the MMR vaccine occur five times more often than measles-related seizures.

Dr. Liz Mumper, a pediatrician, praised PIC for releasing the collection of data on measles, mumps and rubella, and on the MMR vaccine.

“Most parents have not had access to the information contained in the thoughtful analysis done by Physicians for Informed Consent. Parents should recognize that the risk of bad outcomes from a measles infection — if their child lives in a developed country with clean water and is not immune-deficient — is extraordinarily rare, as PIC reports.”

Unfortunately, she added, recent U.S. media reports “sensationalized” the risks of measles.

What’s typically missing from measles media reports

PIC’s statement on measles cited numerous facts commonly overlooked in many media reports on measles outbreaks, including:

  • The U.S. measles mortality rate dropped dramatically before a measles vaccine was introduced in 1963.
  • Immunity from the MMR vaccine wanes so that by age 15, roughly 60% of vaccinated children are susceptible to subclinical measles virus infections.
  • Studies have suggested a link between a naturally acquired measles infection and a reduced risk of Hodgkin’s and non-Hodgkin’s lymphomas.
  • Studies also suggested a link between a naturally acquired measles infection and a lower risk of asthma, eczema and hay fever.
  • Malnutrition — particularly vitamin A deficiency — is a primary cause of over 100,000 measles deaths in underdeveloped countries.

Mumper said that the risk of bad outcomes from a measles infection drastically declined with improved public health and better nutrition long before MMR vaccines were available.

“The risk of bad outcomes has always been more for children in developing countries who are more likely to have nutritional deficiencies including vitamin A and lack access to clean water,” Mumper added.

Last week, independent journalist Alex Berenson reported that a preschool-aged child died of “cardio-respiratory arrest” after taking a dose of Moderna’s Covid mRNA vaccine during its clinical trials. Despite federal requirements to report all trial information, the company withheld the truth for years as it raked in billions from its Covid shots.

The extent of the cover-up remains unknown, but Moderna, headed by CEO Stéphane Bancel, disregarded federal law requiring companies to report “summary results information, including adverse event information, for specified clinical trials of drug products” to clinicaltrials.gov. The company, not the government, is responsible for posting all results, and failure to report the death of a child constitutes a clear breach of US law, which threatens civil action against any party that “falsifies, conceals, or covers up by any trick, scheme, or device a material fact.”

To this point, pharmaceutical companies have remained largely immune for their role in perpetrating globally-scaled deception resulting in thousands of vaccine injuries and billions in profits. They have enjoyed a liability shield courtesy of the PREP Act, which offers protections for injuries resulting from vaccines; that indemnity, however, does not extend to non-compliance with federal regulations, material misstatements or omissions of fact, or other offenses.

The death of the child only became known because of an obscure European report released last year, which revealed that Moderna has known about the death for over two years while it continues to advertise Covid shots to children as young as six months old.

Moderna’s European filing also revealed that the company withheld trial results demonstrating that children under 12 who received the vaccine were ten times more likely than those who received the placebo to suffer “serious side effects.” Without any evidence, Moderna claimed that the side effects, including the death of a child, were unrelated to the shots.

The incoming Trump administration offers a rare opportunity to hold pharmaceutical companies accountable and to investigate the depth of the cover-up.

The FDA is responsible for enforcing the reporting of vaccine trial results, but recent heads of the agency such as Scott Gottlieb and Robert Califf have been fanatical supporters of Big Pharma. Trump’s choice for FDA, Dr. Marty Makary, presents a stark contrast to his predecessors. Makary has criticized the US Government’s reluctance to acknowledge the role of natural immunity in preventing Covid infection, and he opposed the widespread vaccination of children. He testified to Congress, “In the U.S. we gave thousands of healthy kids myocarditis for no good reason, they were already immune. This was avoidable.”

President-elect Trump has tapped Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., perhaps the most well-known critic of the Covid vaccines, to lead the Department of Health and Human Services, which oversees the FDA. He has named Dr. Jay Bhattacharya, an author of the Great Barrington Declaration, as his choice to head the National Institutes of Health. Further, Senator Ron Johnson (R-WI) told Berenson that he plans to subpoena the FDA once Republicans become the majority party in the Senate this month.

President Trump’s first term was ultimately defined by his failure to fulfill his pledge to “drain the swamp.” A corrupt bureaucracy, personified in many ways by Dr. Anthony Fauci, aided and abetted by advisors like his son-in-law, Jared Kushner, hijacked the president’s agenda. Now, the Trump administration has an unlikely yet monumental opportunity for health reform, which can start on January 20 with an investigation into Moderna’s cover-up.

The Covid response doomed Trump 1.0. Whether one regards this as a monumental error, the betrayal of a president by his advisors, an event beyond the president’s control, or a deeper and more complex plot involving everything and everyone associated with the government, both in the US and around the world, there is no question of the scale of the calamity for the public. The shots are part of that, the capstone failure of a long line of foreshadowing with lockdowns and all that was associated with pre-pharmaceutical interventions. The antidote came not as a cure but, for many, the disease itself.

There must be truth if not justice.

The grand jury, convened in December 2022 to investigate “any and all wrongdoing” related to COVID-19 vaccines found no criminal activity, but did find a “pattern of deceptive and obfuscatory behavior on the part of sponsors and regulators that often straddled the line between ethical and unethical conduct.”

Ways for safely treating neck and back pain

OCT 28, 2023

Note: this article reviews various treatments for neck and back pain. One of these is manganese supplementation, which when done correctly (discussed below) restores the ligamentous integrity of the spinal ligaments. This is important as many spinal pain conditions (along with many other diseases) result from weak spinal ligaments.

In the first part of this series, I discussed how pain management fits perfectly into the medical business model since pain is a chronic condition and a lot of money can be made from partially treating it indefinitely. In turn, a variety of unsafe and ineffective medications are routinely used to treat pain, two of which, the NSAIDs and the opioids are arguably some of the most dangerous drugs on the market. Since the existing treatments frequently fail, patients are often referred for spinal surgery, which are both even more profitable than the other options but also even more dangerous.

Conversely, many effective treatments for chronic pain conditions exist, but they have been mostly kept off the market because there is no money to be made in them. In the case of neck and back pain, I feel the primary issue is that limited knowledge exists regarding what causes pain there. This is important because many of the existing “treatments” for back pain actually worsen the underlying causes of that pain. For example, ligamentous laxity underlies many chronic spinal pain conditions, but one of the primary treatments for spinal pain (injected steroids) directly weakens the affected ligaments, creating a situation where therapies which are good for business but bad for patients frequently end up being chosen.
Note: many other conditions like chronic dizziness are also frequently caused by poorly functioning vertebral ligaments.

Similarly, as discussed in the previous article, spinal degeneration is often due to waves of force not being able to smoothly transfer through the spine, something which becomes much worse once part of the spine becomes surgically fused together and loses its ability to move freely.

In this article we will explore the many dangers of spinal fusions, the predatory business model that promotes their use, and many of the safe ways my colleagues and I have used for decades to effectively treat neck and back pain. Prior to reading this article, I would highly recommend reading the first part of this series if you have not yet done so you can better place the ideas here into context.

The Business of Spinal Surgeries

In the first part of this series, I discussed how ligaments in the body weakening triggers many issues, including the spinal joints becoming worn down and arthritic, muscles in the back reflexively tightening, and discs bulging and then herniating. Yet, rather than address this, we often “treat” spinal pain by injecting those arthritic joints with a steroid, which temporarily reduces the inflammation there (for weeks to months) but does not address the cause of the inflammation.

In fact, the opposite happens because steroids weaken ligaments—thus creating the situation where more and more of the treatment is needed to provide a diminishing relief—which sadly is quite commonly seen within the predatory business model Western Medicine thrives upon.

In turn, I and many colleagues believe the reason why spinal steroid injections became so popular was not because of the evidence supporting it, but rather because of how much insurance reimburses for them.
Note: spinal epidural steroid injections (particularly for the low back) used to be an incredibly lucrative procedure (and made pain management one of the highest paying medical specialities). Because this incentivized these procedures and so much money ended up being spent on them, insurance providers (e.g., Medicare) reduced the reimbursements, which in turn resulted in more of them being performed by many doctors in order to make up for the revenue that was lost from declining reimbursements.

Tragically, an even worse situation exists with spinal surgeries, which I would argue results from a high degree of ambiguity with when they are justified and them being one of the most profitable areas in medicine.

Much of this was illustrated by an investigation by the Seattle Times I learned about from a patient who knew the family. It started with the story of Talia who had Ehler-Danlos syndrome and was gradually developing complications from her hypermobility.
Note: While EDS responds very well to certain treatments like nutritional supplementation, it is typically mismanaged and worsened by the increasingly invasive treatments it receives.

Talia’s father, a family physician, took her to see Seattle’s celebrity neurosurgeon, Dr. Delashaw (who as you might guess was widely advertised by the hospital). After selling the family on the surgery and the quality of care she would receive, Talia received it in the hopes it could improve her life—and once the surgery was completed, Deleshaw informed there were no complication and it had been perfect. However:

But as the anesthesia faded in Talia’s system, she realized that not everything was perfect, despite the confident assurances of her surgical team.

Her lower jaw was ajar, jutting forward like a bulldog’s. Her face was swollen. Her delicate, singsong voice came out in a harsh rasp. She couldn’t open her mouth enough to squeeze in a finger. On her hospital bed, lying next to the stuffed rhino and stuffed zebra she’d brought along, Talia croaked to the nurse that she was having difficulty breathing.

She rolled onto her side and vomited in the bed. When the nurse covered up the spew with a towel, Talia vomited again right on top of it.

Her father realized this was potentially a huge problem because she might lose the ability to breathe (due to neck swelling) and then require an emergency intubation, but be impossible to intubate because the fusion prevented her neck from moving. He aggressively petitioned the staff to move her into the ICU in case this happened and to have a cricothyrotomy kit available so an emergency hole could be cut into her neck to get air in.

The hospital staff repeatedly dismissed their concerns (even as Talia become more and more unable to breathe), and Dr. Deleshaw did nothing except quickly document that Talia was doing well.

Approximately 24 hours after her surgery, Talia’s throat closed and she lost the ability to breath. The ICU staff attempted to intubate her (which was impossible due to her fusion) and ignored Talia’s father’s pleas for an emergency cricothyrotomy (which I presume was ignored since it differed from their standard procedure) and after 20 minutes of impaired breathing, Talia entered cardiac arrest.

About 15 minutes after Talia took her last breath, a new doctor came in the room and assessed the scene. He [at last] called for the crike kit.
None was in the room.
This experience broke Talia’s father and led to him quitting the practice of medicine.

The publicity this case created led to a lengthy investigation of the hospital where it was discovered:

• In 2012, Dr. Deleshaw was hired by UC Irvine in 2011 because the administrators there (as memos showed) believed Delashaw could make them a lot of money and gave him a starting salary of 900,000 plus a commission for the money his surgeries made and those he could incentivize his colleagues to perform.

• Once there, Deleshaw started siphoning money from his colleagues to himself, which understandably upset the other doctors and Deleshaw later justified in testimony by stating:

I wanted all my faculty — as I said to them many times — I want them to be rich… But in order to be rich, you have to work and you have to do clinical volume or you have to have other kinds of financial support.

• At UC Irvine, his colleagues reported him for dozens of cases where Deleshaw had performed, reckless, unjustified, fraudulent (claiming to operate when the operation had not been really performed) and partially botched surgeries. They feared many of these surgeries were clear malpractice cases where a jury would almost certainly side against UC Irvine, and to quote one of his colleagues:

[Deleshaw’s surgical complication rates] are higher than anybody else I’ve ever seen in my life.

• To sustain this volume, Deleshaw would often delegate most of his work to doctor training under him (e.g., he would have three operations he was supposedly performing occur simultaneously or have clinic patients scheduled at the same time one of his “operations” was running). This is important because when he sold those operations to prospective patients, he made them feel like he would take care of the entire case and give a lot of attention to them to ensure they had the best possible outcome from the “amazing neurosurgeon.”

• Many other complaints were also filed against him such as forcing a patient who did not want a surgery to get one, giving questionable testimony in a malpractice case. One of the most noteworthy testimonials I saw against him occurred when the family of a patient he’d just operated on wouldn’t pick the patient up after the surgery (which required Deleshaw to have to spend a bit of time documenting the patient’s stay in the hospital), and Deleshaw forced a resident to call immigration control so the patient (who was not legally in the country) would be picked up by them and then deported—thereby removing the patient from the hospital.

• Despite these complaints UC Irvine did not address them, presumably due to all the money Deleshaw made for the institution and then two years after working at UC Irvine, the Seattle hospital decided to recruit Deleshaw to run their neurosurgery department against the protest of their own surgeons.

• Once hired, Deleshaw delivered and quickly changed the department to one that did far more lucrative surgeries:

• This required triple booking surgeries, doing a variety of more invasive (but more lucrative) surgeries and short staffing the hospital staff who looked after patients once the operation was complete.

For example, when aneurysms are treated, a safer option (accessing the brain through a blood vessels) can often be performed in place of a dangerous one (cutting the skull open to operate) and at both Irvine and Seattle, Deleshaw made the majority of surgeries switch to the more dangerous one (e.g., he increased the rate 5-fold at Irvine), which was followed by the severe complications of those surgeries dramatically increasing (e.g., severe brain bleeds were 9% there vs. 4% at other hospitals in the state, and brain bleeds after the clippings were 14% there vs. 7% for the state).

• Ultimately dozens of his colleagues left the hospital because they felt uncomfortable with the clear risk Deleshaw exposed patients to. Nonetheless, the hospital retained him in his chair position (paying him 2 million dollars in 2014), and when a medical board investigation was later conducted (due to Deleshaw creating a hostile work environment for his colleagues) it ultimately concluded that Deleshaw had done nothing wrong and no sanctions were taken against his license. In 2017 he left Seattle, and then later was hired by Tulane where he now works as a professor of neurosurgery.

Note: Deleshaw also sued the Seattle Times for their investigation of him. Ultimately the one “positive” thing which came out of all of this was the court dismissing his libel lawsuit.

Deleshaw clearly put profits before his patients, to the point such unsustainably high numbers of surgeries were done, even patients like Talia who had a doctor advocating for them throughout their patient stay could not get basic medical care done to protect them from lethal complications of these rushed surgeries.

At the same it’s important to note that while some neurosurgeons followed in Deleshaw’s footsteps, many others did not and prioritized the welfare of their patients over making even more money. However, the key takeaway from this story is not Deleshaw’s conduct, but rather that the administrators in both California and Washington sided with the unethical doctors because they made way more money for the hospital (and likewise changed the physician’s compensation structure to incentivize them performing more of these unsafe surgeries).

This in short is identical to the situation we saw throughout COVID-19—many doctors wanted to do the right thing and save their patient’s lives, but they were sanctioned by the hospital (and often the state) for doing so since it cost the hospital money, whereas the doctors who had many of their COVID-19 patients die because they followed bad protocols faced no consequences for doing so. Similarly, many doctors (including numerous ones I’ve corresponded with in both the USA and Canada) immediately recognized the dangers of the vaccines, but were sanctioned by their hospital for discussing this with patients and thus could not share those concerns.
Note: as detailed in The War on Ivermectin, there were 80 lawsuits where families with a relative being subjected to Fauci’s hospital COVID protocols and was expected to die had lawyer Ralph Lorigo sue the hospital for ivermectin to be administered to their relative. Of those 80 lawsuits, in 40 the judge sided with the family, and in 40 with the hospital. Of the 40 cases where ivermectin was given, 38 of the 40 patients survived. Of the 40 cases where the hospitals were allowed to withhold ivermectin, 2 of the 40 patients survived. This should have been a sign to consider using ivermectin but instead the hospitals banded together to develop a robust legal strategy to prevent any future lawsuits from succeeding. This in my eyes clearly illustrates the degree to which hospitals prioritize profits over patients.

So, I would argue that the incredible amount of money to be made in neurological surgeries means that you cannot just assume they are being done because they are in the best interests of the patients. In turn, the existing evidence shows that patients often do not benefit from spinal surgeries, but since there is a high degree of ambiguity in the value of those surgeries, less-ethical surgeons will frequently perform them on patients who are otherwise not good candidates for them. For example, while Deleshaw worked in Seattle, he dramatically increased the rate of (not medically justifiable) Lumbar fusions that were done.
Note: the existing evidence supporting spinal fusions is much weaker than you would expect (given how frequently they are performed). The existing evidence in turn shows the patients who respond best to spinal surgeries are those who have both pain and clear clinical signs of a nerve impingement. However, in many cases, spinal surgeries are performed in patients without those neurological signs.

The Risks and Benefits of Spinal Surgeries

When considering a spinal surgeries, I’ve found the following to be true:

• Cervical spinal surgeries cause the greatest number of issues for people.

• Thoracic spinal surgeries are the least frequently done (as they are the most difficult to do and the least likely site of a disc bulge or herniation due to the stability created by the rib cage). Normally, these are only done because the patient has an unusual condition (e.g., a damaged bone) which requires a surgical repair.

• Lumbar spinal surgeries, while not perfect, tend to benefit patients more than cervical spinal surgeries.

With surgeries, there are a few different types that are done. Such as:

Repairing a broken bone—these, while less than ideal are necessary and hence their benefits outweigh their risks.

Removing part of the vertebrae which is compressing a nerve (termed a laminectomy)—these tend to offer the greatest benefit to patients. In the lumbar spine they are frequently life changing and have minimal side effects, while in the cervical spine, they often benefit patients but have a greater risk of causing complications.
Note: there are non-surgical ways to perform laminectomies I’ve seen work wonders for patients, but very few people perform them due to the difficulty and potential liability involved.

Inserting foreign hardware into the spine (e.g., a spacer between two vertebrae where the disc is) or attaching multiple vertebrae to a piece of metal (termed a spinal fusion). There are a variety of ways fusions can be done, some of which partially preserve the motion of the spine (and cause less issues) and others which fully fuse a large portion of the spine to immovable rods running along it.
Note: surgeries that remove parts of a herniated disc are also performed. These often are followed by the placement of surgical hardware to stabilize the spine, especially if a significant portion of the spine in removed.

Throughout my career, I have both met people who considered spinal fusions to be life changing for then, but I have also met more people than I can count who had a very bad response to the fusion and would have given anything to have gone back in time and not gotten it.

Some of the major issues with spinal fusions include:

• The spinal fusion does not relieve a patient’s pain and often makes it harder to fix in the long term (e.g., patients with “failed back syndrome” are much harder to treat the pain of later on).
Note: almost all of the chronic back pain patients my colleagues and I have had minimal success with fell into this category.

• Loss of mobility in the spine (which can often be quite significant).

• Over time, the fusions (or the attached vertebrae) will often wear down and fail, which leads to the spinal fusion needing to be redone, or the patient being worse than they started after the fusion has failed. Similarly, vertebraes immediately next to a fusions often will gradually fail.
Note: the spine continually moves and conducts force through it, so if a place can’t move, force disproportionately concentrates there (e.g., the top or bottom of a fusion).

• Defective hardware fails in the patient, or experimental hardware is used without the patient’s consent. This can include defective (but proprietary) screws being used, blood-clot inducing cement being used, and counterfeit hardware being used.
Note: there have been numerous lawsuits over this as since spinal surgeries are a highly lucrative field, many questionable products are pushed onto the market by investors looking to make a quick profit. Similarly, spinal surgeons are often paid off by the hardware manufacturers to use their dubious wares.

• Toxic reactions to the metals used for spinal fusions (termed metallosis). I periodically meet patients who develop significant chronic injuries due to their reactivity to the metals placed in their spine (e.g., sadly I recently heard of a patient who underwent medically assisted suicide because no “expert” knew that their symptoms were a common example of metallosis and thus told the patient the illness was incurable). These reactions are the most common when toxic metals (cobalt, chromium or nickel) are used in the implants.
Note: research has shown that toxic metals from implants frequently corrode and enter the circulation. Additionally, while most physicians are unaware of metallosis, there are hundreds of studies on it and it has been repeatedly shown that metallosis can occur weeks to years after spinal fusions.

• A loss of sensation is created in the body due to a nerve being affected by the fusion. A variety of other much more debilitating conditions (e.g., arachnoiditis can also occur).
Note: metallosis can induce compressions of nerves.

• Significant injuries can occur as complications of the surgeries (e.g., consider Talia’s story). Likewise, many cases (e.g., in the elderly), a high rate of death occurs in the years immediately following the operation.

• There is a significant disruption of the vital energy that runs through the spine.
Note: while this one seems strange, many spiritual teachers I’ve spoken to feel very strongly about the importance of it. One of the best anecdotes I can describe was a vaccine injured patient I worked with who had a cervical fusion (which had to be redone) prior to the vaccine, and after their vaccine reaction, appeared to have developed a loss of neurological function on the left side of their body originating at the site of the fusion. I sent them to a well-known Chinese medicine practitioner who was able to restore their neurologic function and told me that “the Qi was very blocked there, it was hard to open it.”

For each of these reasons, I try to help patients avoid spinal surgeries unless it is very clear they need one and will benefit from it and it cannot be treated in another manner.

Treating Spinal Pain

When working with patients who have spinal pain, I find that most of what can be done with the conventional approaches can be achieved with much less invasive (and significantly more effective approaches.

Typically, I initially try doing some combination of the following:

• Send them to someone who had a good track record in providing permanent improvements through spinal manipulation (and more importantly does not injure people).
Note: in patients with ligamentous laxity or weakened bones, popping techniques can often cause significant issues.

• Have them address their upper-cross syndrome and any other tight muscles that appear to be contributing to the pressure on their spine.

• Do something to decompress the spine if there are any signs a disc in compressing the nerves of the spine.

In the majority of cases, these work (especially if the correct person does them). If they don’t or they only provide temporary relief, I then look at a variety of other less common causes and consider having options for acutely managing their pain.

While there are some nuances on how to do them correctly (e.g., the physical therapy and regenerative approaches for treating disc herniations or ligamentous instability), I find in the majority of cases they work and can avoid the need for surgery. When reading these, try to really think through each before you do them so you either do them correctly or find the correct person to do them with.
